NSHS Percussion Ensemble
As part of the Newman Smith band, the percussion program offers a comprehensive approach to the study and performance of literature in various styles and idioms of music. The curriculum is designed to develop musicianship, technical proficiency and cultural awareness. The program is comprised of 9-12th grade students who actively participate in the Newman Smith Percussion Ensemble, The Newman Smith Trojan Marching Band, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Orchestra and Jazz Ensembles I and II.
During the fall semester, the students participate in numerous contests as part of the Trojan Marching Band and also compete at area drum line events. In addition, the students focus on concert percussion techniques in preparation for region band auditions as well as drum set techniques for region jazz auditions.
During the spring semester, the Newman Smith Percussion Ensemble presents their annual percussion ensemble concert, focusing on repertoire of a broad stylistic range including classical transcriptions, idiomatic ensemble pieces, ethnic, pop, and novelty music. The students also have an opportunity to showcase their individual skills at the annual UIL Solo and Ensemble contest.
