NSHS Directors
Andy Rein has taught at Newman Smith High School since 2008. Since his appointment at Smith, Mr. Rein's concert bands have consistently received the UIL Sweepstakes award. Before coming to Smith, Mr. Rein taught at Harpeth High School and Harpeth Middle School in Kingston Springs, TN. During his tenure, both schools consistently received superior ratings at concert festival and Harpeth High School finished as high as 2nd in the Tennessee AA State Marching Band Competition each of his three years with the program.Mr. Rein received his bachelor's degree in music education from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, where he studied Bass Trombone with Susan K. Smith of the Nashville Symphony. He then received his Masters in Music Performance from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois, where his primary teacher was Charles Vernon, bass trombonist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. His other teachers have included Tom Matta, Floyd Cooley, and Ed Kleinhammer.Mr. Rein has been a professional bass trombonist in Chicago, Nashville and now Dallas. He was also a member of the 1995 and 1998 Colts Drum and Bugle Corps. He currently lives in Carrollton with his wife Katie and his dogs, Parker, Derby, and Zoey.
Dr. Parks has been the Percussion Director at Newman Smith High School since 2005. Dr. Parks received his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Austin Peay State University where he studied percussion with David Steinquest. In addition, he earned a Master's Degree in Percussion Performance and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree, both from the University of Kentucky, under the direction of Professor James Campbell.Dr. Parks has been on the percussion faculty at the Bands of America/Music For All Summer Symposium since the summer of 2001, served on the faculty of Yamaha Sounds of Summer Camps, and has taught and arranged for high schools throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Tennessee, and abroad in Japan. He is also a founding member of the UK Percussion Quartet, which has performed throughout Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana, including a performance at the first annual Bands of America National Percussion Ensemble Festival. During the summer of 1999 he was a member of the Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps and has served as a percussion consultant for Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps.Dr. Parks recently served as a contributing composer for a multiple percussion book entitled "Mutlitudes" edited by Dr. Andrew Bliss, published by Innovative Percussion, as well as contributing composer for a collection of rudimental solos in the newly released compilation entitled "The Blue Book," published by Tapspace Publications.Dr. Parks is a Yamaha Performing Artist and an endorser of Innovative Percussion Sticks & Mallets and Evans Drum Heads.
Trevor Kay is in his first year as Assistant Director at Newman Smith High School. Before coming to Smith, Mr. Kay held positions at Centennial High School in the Burleson ISD and Elgin High School in the Elgin ISD. While at Centennial, the band enjoyed many accomplishments including being named alternate to the State Marching Contest in their inaugural year.Originally from Carrollton, Mr. Kay is a proud alum of Newman Smith High School. Following high school, he attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX where he received his Bachelor's degree in Music Education. While at Texas Tech, Mr. Kay studied horn with Christopher M. Smith and was a member of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Sarah McKoin. In addition, Mr. Kay performed with the Symphonic Band, the Court Jesters Basketball Band, and the award-winning "Goin' Band from Raiderland", where he served as horn section leader for three years. An avid drum corps fan, Mr. Kay marched with the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps from Madison, Wisconsin in the summer of 2005.Mr. Kay's professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, and Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity.
